Catwalk Beauty Trends

Make-up artist, Peter Carroll takes us through what’s hot for Spring Summer 2011, with tips on how to achieve the looks and what products to use.

Makeup on the SS11 catwalks had two extremes, minimalism or block colour. There was no in between! Immaculate complexion, flushed cheeks and bright bold colours.
Minimalism means flawless skin and that doesn’t come from makeup alone. Exfoliating and moisturizing is so important. There is only one exfoliator worth mentioning as far as I’m concerned, MAC Mircofine Refinisher. If you try it, you’ll understand! Try to avoid that awful habit of applying foundation with your fingers and use a brush. While designed for use with powder products, I find duo fibre brushes to be an excellent tool for achieving flawless foundation.

(Top) Christian Dior, Bottega Venetta, Prada, Carolina Herrera.
(Bottom) Balmain, Calvin Klein, Alexander McQueen, Dolce & Gabbana.
If bold colours aren’t for you, lightly contour your eye sockets with beige browns like MAC Cork or No7 Truffle. Vanillas like Smashbox Vanilla or Revlon Sunlit Sparkle on the eyelids and don’t forget that makeup staple, mascara. Cheeks are “windblown” this season so a light flush of MAC Pinch O’ Peach or Revlon Soft Spoken Pink will do the trick, less is more. Leave the lipstick at home and opt for a very light coating of clear gloss. MAC Clear Lipglass is a must have and only a tiny amount is required to cover the lip area.
If you prefer to be more adventurous, eyes are all about cooler tones of blue, green, lilac and yellow. More is more with these colours so throw the rule book out and have fun, but remember, block colour is the idea here so just one shade per look. Try MAC Chrome Yellow, MAC Beautiful Iris, Barry M Pretty Pastels Trio, Bourjois No2 Saturé, Rimmel Glam Eyes Urban Green or YSL Ombre Lunar Purple. Cheeks remain the same as the minimal look so don’t over do it. Glossy red lips were a staple this season but intense fuchsia also made an appearance. MAC Ruby Woo, MAC Russian Red, Revlon Just Bitten Lip Stain & Balm in Passion and my long time favourite fuchsia, NARS Schiap.
It goes without saying that as SS11 approaches, all of the cosmetics counters will have a collection to showcase their own take on this seasons must haves. A couple of collections worth a look are Estée Lauder’s Pure Color Wild Violet and Wild Coral, MAC’s Stylishly Yours and, even though it isn’t based on the SS11 catwalks, MAC + Mickey Contractor (ahem, it’s ok to giggle, everyone will!).

Illamasqua New Collection: Heart Throbe

Some of you might know about Illamasqua some of you don't. Those of you who don't here is a little background on the brand :
Illamasqua is the product of a heady mix of influences. Its roots stem from the dark and illicit 1920s club scene, and combine a rich heritage in the manufacture of make-up for film and theatre. It also takes inspiration from members of the ‘alternative scenes’ for whom self-expression is paramount. Alternative cultures have always dared to be dramatic. They have an emotional attachment to making up. It’s an expression of their darker side, a release for their alter ego.

Illamasqua is for the bolder person hiding inside all of us. It is an act and an attitude. A symbol of tolerance. A celebration of idiosyncrasies. A confident statement of self-ownership.

For a long time the brand was not available for purchase in the states but more recently they have decided to release the brand in the states flagship Sephora's. The shadows and foundations and lip stick are priced from $20.00-$24.00. It's a good price because they are highly pigmented and amazing and long lasting.

Looking for illamasqua in Chicago visit the sephora on Michigan ave. in the water tower and check them out its worth the go see or visit the web site www.illamasqua.com.

Makeup Trends| 8 Eyeliner Tips For 3 Stand-Out Looks

Eyeliner may be a makeup basic, but don't think you have to be relegated to just one type. It's one of makeup's most adaptable staples—a daytime and nighttime essential that instantly transforms your look by creating shape and giving definition to your peepers. Ready to master the art of eyeliner in 2011? We show you how to flip the switch on your regular routine and inject some drama, softness, or polish into your look with three easy eyeliner tips.

On the Inside —Lining the waterline, or inner rim of the eye, adds intensity and extra definition, and creates the illusion of a thicker, fuller lash line. Gilbert Soliz, Lead Artist for the Sephora PRO Beauty Team, tells us how.

The Tips: "Start with a sharpened pencil, but rub it down a bit on the back of your hand so it's not too sharp. While looking in the mirror, tilt your chin up a few inches and use a finger on your free had to press lightly inward and up on your lid (or down, depending on which lid you're lining) to flip the lash line forward and expose the roots of your lashes. Using a smudge-proof or waterproof liner, wiggle your pencil in between the roots of the lashes from inner to outer corner. You want to deposit plenty of color, so the product adheres and sits well at the root of the lashes, but don't go too far into the waterline, or the product vanishes when coming in contact with the eye."

The Tools: Bare Escentuals Buxom Insider Eyeliner in Onyx, $14, available at Sephora; Sephora Retractable Waterproof Eyeliner in Brown, $12, available at Sephora.

Exclusive Interview with "Beyonce and Solange" Makeup Artist Jackie Gomez

Beyonce and Solange Makeup Artist opened up and gave us an insde scoop on what she uses on the two celeberties! Enjoy

I am pleased to present you with my exclusive interview with celebrity makeup artist, Jackie Gomez*, who currently works with international superstars Beyonce, Solange, and many others.

You'll get the inside scoop on some of the actual products Gomez uses on Beyonce and Solange for their on stage perfomances and red carpet appearances, as well as what special cosmetic and beauty items are actually in Gomez's own cosmetic bag...enjoy! - RLB

*Be sure to follow Jackie on twitter @JGMakeupxoxo

RLB: What is the most challenging technical/creative aspect of doing Beyonce’s makeup for her shows?

JG:Beyonce is a very busy gal to say the least. Her pre‐show routine consists of several meetings, a yoga stretch, and other last minute preparations. After all said and done, it only leaves me about 15 to 20 minutes to do her stage makeup. With that said, it is definitely a challenge to achieve a perfect look in such a short amount of time!

RLB: How do you adjust/touch up Beyonce’s look during a show?

JG: We have time to blot her but there’s simply no time for touch ups. Therefore, the first application must be heavy.

RLB: What do you feel is a “must have" beauty product?

JG: Everyone should own BeautyBlender’s new sponge! It’s my new obsession. Not only is this hot pink sponge fun but it also really helps to smooth out the foundation for a flawless, airbrushed finish. The best part it of it all is that it comes with its own cleanser so you can reuse it!

RLB: What are your 5 favorite products you love to use on Beyonce and Solange?

JG: For Beyonce...

1. Mac lashes #35

2. Smashbox Concealer camera ready #5

3. Caudalie Beauty elixir

4. Nars Sedona powder foundation

5. Tarte Eye couture palette

For Solange...

1.Mac lashes #35

2. Amazing concealer in Tan

3. Clinique even better skin foundation

4. Stila Kohl liner

5.Mac lipstick impassioned

RLB: What 5 products are ALWAYS in your personal makeup kit?

JG: I always have the following -

1. La Mer translucent powder

2. Mac prep and prime

3. Nars Duo in Casino/orgasm

4. Smashbox eye shadow in oyster

5. BeautyBlender Sponge

RLB: What is your favorite new cosmetic product find this year?

JG: This year I stumbled upon a new brand called Illamasqua and totally fell in love with their products. It’s a UK based brand that is described as “makeup for your alter ego”. To achieve a truly fierce look I use their Dystopia Liquid Metal, which is an intensely metallic and highly pigmented cream that can be used on body or face.

RLB: What's your #1 beauty trick that every woman can use to look great quickly.

JG: I must say that would have to be mascara and an eyelash curler! Curling your lashes and applying a few layers of mascara really opens up your eyes, making them pop and brightening the overall complexion. It honestly makes all the difference in the world!

RLB: What’s next for you?

JG: I am looking forward to working with all my current clients, who’ve been absolutely amazing. But I am also excited to be working with some new faces as well. I have a ton of projects coming up, so sit tight and brace yourselves because I’m ready to rock. Xoxo.
